Black Star

BLACK STAR: a star that shines so brightly, it burns out and dies, but leaves its mass behind. Every year, more addicts suffer at the hands of a system that punish victims of addiction, and fail to provide effective treatments that break the cycle.

Former addict Joe Polish became inspired to seek answers from artists, a group that suffers greatly from addiction.

When he approached artist Jon Butcher with this idea to use “art as a force for good,” it resonated deeply. Jon grew up in a family of artists, with addiction running so deeply among them it took the lives of 3 of his brothers.

Black Star chronicles Jon’s channeling of an art piece that represents 80 artists the world has lost. Through this process, Jon not only explores the relationship between art and addiction, but experiences a powerful transformation of his own.

The result is Black Star, is a tribute to the artists we’ve lost to addiction and a call for each of us to help those who are currently struggling.
